Direction, Not Perfection: The Truth In Movement

Direction, Not Perfection

I promise to choose a direction and move.

I promise to fall along the way and pick the pace back up.  I promise to learn more about my terrain with every step and every stumble.  I promise to keep going in the right direction.

It’s direction, not perfection that matters.

Sometimes I choose a direction, and then I prep for the journey.  I make sure to research everything I might need.  I pay painfully close attention to the smallest details.  I am so busy looking around my point of origin that I stop looking at my destination.  Minutia overwhelms me, and I stop moving – before I even start.

Move Carlos!

Take an action.  You don’t have to run blindly, reacting to everything along the way.  That’s dangerous.  But you do have to start.  Take what equipment you have for the journey, and you’ll find more resources along the way.  You’ll have what you need, but you have to start!

I started.

I prepared quickly and efficiently, and then I started moving.  I wrote my first entry.  Things happened.  Because I had direction.

I made mistakes.  Ones that could have been prevented if I had done more research, more prep-work.  But if I had postponed my launch, would I have started moving?

Solutions to site problems started popping up from helpful people.  Problems?  No problem.  Just gotta keep moving.

Where am I going?

I am becoming my best self.  I’m making change no matter how hard I resist myself.  I am stopping bad habits from following me.  I am finding my voice.  I am being inspired by awesome people to be myself and like it.  I am talking to you and you’re listening – and responding.  I am listening.  I am being blessed.  I am gaining freedom.

And life is happier.

I make decisions to be happy, and it works – because I’m not looking back at what I left behind, wondering if I did the right thing.  I’m happy because I’m enthusiastic about where I’m going.

Movement is good.

It’s Growth.  It’s Passion.

This is Truth.

This is Perfection Direction.

  • 90% of people take no more action than deciding where to go out to eat.

    You’re already ahead.

This reminds me of why I appreciate National Novel Writing Month every November. I spend much of the rest of the year vacillating back and forth: Do I have what it takes to be a writer? Shouldn’t I know/learn more? Surely I need more resources before I get myself into this! And all these paralyzing questions, even with six complete novels under my belt.

But then October 31st rolls around, and I know my wishy-washiness must die. Because bright and early November 1st, I’m going to be plunging into a new novel, whether I feel ready for it or not. Whatever resources I have, those are the resources I have–and I’m not given the luxury of time to acquire more. I cut out the tongue of my perfectionist Inner Editor, throw her into the deepest dungeon of my psyche, lock the door, and give the key over to this wiry little old man with a bazooka and a couple of slavering Dobermans. Am I gonna get anywhere near that key so as to release the Inner Editor during November? You bet yer patootie I aint. My momma didn’t raise no dummy. ;o)

@Courtney: Have I told you that you crack my shit up? I can completely understand the correlation. That is exactly it! There comes a point where preparation just doesn’t do you any good anymore. You just gotta jump in. The water’s…well, may not always be fine, but it will be.

Perhaps the biggest hurdle in our lives is getting over the fear of taking action. Those who do take action, must also condition themselves to accept failure and continue moving forward. With new action, comes the possibility of failure. The fear of failure drives the majority of us into stagnation. Strength within one’s self must be twofold. First, the courage to confront who we are and act accordingly. Second, to keep dusting ourselves off and moving forward after we fall.

  • @Ben Stapp: You are right on…I like the “twofold” part. It does take a lot of initial courage to take that first step, but also requires making that same choice, using the same courage repeatedly to make a great change. Thanks for your comment, it’s always reaffirming and encouraging to hear other people’s thoughts on these things.
